Dems declare open season on Pork

Democrats tidying up a cluster of unfinished spending bills dumped on them by departing Republican leaders in Congress will start by removing billions of dollars in lawmakers' pet projects next month.

The move, orchestrated by the incoming chairmen of the House and Senate Appropriations committees, could prove politically savvy even as it proves unpopular with other members of Congress, who as a group will lose thousands of so-called earmarks.

"There will be no congressional earmarks," Rep. David Obey , D-Wis., and Sen. Robert Byrd , D-W.Va., said Monday in a statement announcing their plans, which were quickly endorsed by incoming Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., and soon-to-be Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev.

Earmarks are congressionally mandated projects such as grants for local governments, home-state universities and hospitals, roads, bridges and flood control construction, and economic development efforts not included in the president's spending proposals.

Often called "pork" by critics, their sponsors defend inserting the projects into spending bills by claiming that, as elected representatives, they know more about the needs of people in their states and government programs than the president or bureaucrats in the executive branch.

Such projects have exploded in number under GOP control of Congress over the last 12 years and at the same time have spawned a boom on Washington's K Street lobbying corridor, where consultants earn big fees by helping outsiders navigate the system.

Hard to complain much about that move but one has to wonder where and when they will sneak it back in especially seeing that the King of Pork Sen Byrd is involved.

Above the law in Kentucky schools

School paddling brings assault warrant

Last week, however, McGuire obtained an assault warrant against the principal at Central Elementary in Johnson County, one of 50 school districts in Kentucky that still permit corporal punishment.

McGuire concedes he gave the school permission to paddle his son at the beginning of the school year. The boy was punished Nov. 27 after what McGuire termed a wrestling match with another student during recess.

But McGuire says principal Ben Hamilton, 43, went too far and hit too hard.

"He crossed the line," said McGuire, who said bruises on his son's buttocks in the shape of a paddle were still visible yesterday. "You're talking about a straight-A student who's never been in trouble before and, in his first whipping, you tear his backside off."

So 9 days later the bruises are still visible and that is an acceptable paddling in this school? I think I would have a hard time with that one. If a parent was to spank their child in the local Walmart and 9 days later I would wager Social Services would not agree. But apparently some think it is okay:

Principal accused of paddling too harshly

Hamilton referred questions to his lawyer, Ned Pillersdorf, who said he has filed a motion to dismiss the warrant because Hamilton is immune from prosecution under state law. Principals have the right to use necessary force to promote discipline, Pillersdorf said yesterday.

Teacher Beth Lemaster, who witnessed the paddling, said in a court affidavit that it "was not excessive, hurtful and was routine in nature, and was designed to instill discipline in the child."

Perhaps the good teacher should define for the class "excessive". Bruises were left 9 days later and it was not excessive. What kind of paddling is she used to seeing doled out to the kids at that school anyway?

I'm a little curious myself about the "immune from prosecution" thing. How immune are we talking here can he break bones while paddling?

Former Secretary of State James Baker and his panelists are trying to shore up the failing regional system that their generation designed. Released yesterday, their report doesn't offer "a new way forward." Its recommendations echo past failures. And it shows no sense of how gravely the world has changed.

The report doesn't offer a plan, but a muddle of truisms and truly bad ideas.

Its a shame W had to bring in that old turd to point the way. Especially since it seems to point the way to failure.

I always said they were Socialists at heart

European Socialists promised on Thursday to work to rebuild Europe's strategic alliance with the United States now that the Democrats control Congress after last month's elections.

Socialist leaders attending a meeting of the European Socialist Party pledged that with the Democrats on the rise, strong ties could be renewed with the United States after years of cool relations with Republican President George W. Bush.

Howard Dean, chairman of the national committee of the U.S. Democratic Party, is attending the two-day conference together with the leaders of leftist governments of several countries and party leaders from across Europe.

So if you ever wondered where the Democrats get some of their screwed up ideas there you go. Seeing the abysmal failure of the social welfare systems across Europe I can certainly see why the Democrats would want to mimic that. Like when the Kentucky Dept of Education took all the education reform ideas that were tried (and failed) in California repackaged them as KERA and turned it loose on Kentucky schools.

The message arabs received

From Strategy Page

The Arab world sees the Democratic Party gains in the recent U.S. elections as a sign that Americans are getting tired of the violence in Iraq, and are ready to leave. The Arabs also see the Democrats are more pro-European, and thus more anti-Israel and more tolerant of Islamic terrorists and traditional forms of government (dictatorships and monarchies) in the Arab world. The elections also confirm, in the Arab mind, that the Americans cannot be trusted in the long run, have no stomach for bloodshed and can always be turned around by the more clever Arab tactics. For the Iraqi Shia Arabs, the departure of the Americans won't change anything. It was nice having them, their money, and their deadly soldiers around. But the Shia Arabs have enough guns, and people trained to use them, to deal with the Iraqi Sunni Arabs. The Americans have served their purpose, and it's time for them to go.

Yuck

Have you seen the crap that passes for food in schools these days? Odds are if you attended school in the 80's you will not be suprised because it looks like the same selection. The soy cheeseburgers, greasy squares of pizza and who can forget the chili dogs that the wiener is grey. I had to go into a school last week to shadow the school nurse (a whole story in itself) and I can tell you the only difference I saw was the addition of a salad bar.

Now I see this
headline where a parent is told he cannot bring fast food into the school to eat with his child. So now I am curious. Are there restrictions on what a child can bring to eat if they choose not to eat the school food?

After hanging out for a day at the school I can understand where the school is coming from there are some fat kids there. One that stands out in my mind was the 118lb 2nd grader. Any way you slice it thats a great deal of weight for 2nd grader to be carrying around and the odds that the child will develope Type II Diabetes are high. Actually if you look it up KY is leading the nation in many areas and none of them good things. Things like adults that smoke, obesity and non-traumatic amputations.

Now you are thinking whats with the amputation thing. Type II diabetes like in this child is a direct result of being over weight. Diabetics fall prey to whittling surgeries. Circulation decreases and sooner or later they loose a toe, then a foot, and eventually the leg. Normally you see this in much older adults. But now that diabetes is hitting children because of early obesity that means the amputations will start sooner as well.

Something to chew on.

Not going to miss them

"Nobody's going to come back from Canada anymore," said James Fennerty, a Chicago-based attorney who represents Snyder and other AWOL soldiers.

At least not until some assbag Democrat like Jimmy Carter pardons them all.

Army Spc. Darrell Anderson, who drew wide attention for deserting the Army rather than face a possible second tour in Iraq, was released Friday from Fort Knox and is expected to be discharged without a court-martial, his lawyer said.“It’s really great he doesn’t have to face a court-martial,” said his attorney, Jim Fennerty of Chicago. “I’m all excited, he’s excited.”

Thats wonderful news now maybe you can take your sorry ass back up to Canada. We really dont need you fouling up Kentuckys gene pool with any deserter spawn. Why dont you take your cowardly ass to Vietnam Vet PTSD support group meeting and see if they can help you with your nightmares though before you go.

Real criminals?

Pennsylvania Mayor Pushes Measure to Crack Down on Illegal Immigrants

HAZLETON, Pa. — With tensions rising and the police department and municipal budget stretched thin, Hazleton is about to embark on one of the toughest crackdowns on illegal immigrants anywhere in the United States.

Last week the mayor of this former coal town introduced, and the City Council tentatively approved, a measure that would revoke the business licenses of companies that employ illegal immigrants; impose $1,000 fines on landlords who rent to illegal immigrants; and make English the official language of the city.

Sounds great to me. But its the last paragraph that just boggles the mind:

Jose Lechuga, 42, came to the United States illegally in 1982, received amnesty in 1986 and now operates a grocery store and restaurant in Hazleton. He said the mayor is "confusing illegal people with criminals."

Obviously giving him amnesty sent the wrong message as he now thinks being her illegally is not criminal. Perhaps Jose needs to polish up his use of the English language.

If its that stressful go home!

Immigration sweep brings fear to community

A sense of unease has spread in this community of weather-worn homes since immigration agents began walking the streets as part of a stepped-up nationwide effort targeting an estimated 590,000 immigrant fugitives. Other illegal immigrants are being rounded up along the way.

Wow that number just shoots up or down depending on who is telling the tale. Isn't it horrible that in America criminals live in fear of being caught!

Oh the horror!

Pentagon details abuse of Iraq detainees

"WASHINGTON - U.S. special operations forces fed some Iraqi detainees only bread and water for up to 17 days, used unapproved interrogation practices such as sleep deprivation and loud music and stripped at least one prisoner, according to a Pentagon report on incidents dating to 2003 and 2004.

Formica found that overall conditions "did not comport with the spirit of the principles set forth in the Geneva Conventions," which require humane treatment of prisoners.

Formica said, for example, that the forces used five interrogation techniques that were allowed at one point but had been rescinded by then: sleep or food deprivation, yelling and loud music, forcing detainees to remain in stressful physical positions and changing environmental conditions — which could include making their locations too hot or too cold."

WTF is the "spirit" of the Geneva Conventions. The Geneva Conventions should not apply to nonuniformed combatants. In WWII those caught fighting without uniforms were shot. Now that would certainly solve the problem of what to do with the prisoners in Gitmo.

Justice served?

So you think if I punch a black cop I can play the race card to get out of jail time for it? Yeah me either. What really sickens me about the whole thing was how quickly she used her trump card. Although from what I have read the general public and even the black caucus wasn't buying it.

Grand jury declines to indict McKinney

WASHINGTON - A grand jury declined Friday to indict Rep. Cynthia McKinney in connection with a confrontation in which she admitted hitting a police officer who tried to stop her from entering a House office building.
