Looking back on the four years of his first administration, President Obama can be proud: He made the US welcome among the family of nations again; he reduced our reliance on military force; and he gave us peace by reaching sensible accommodations with our enemies.

The lies told about him in the 2008 election were exposed as sheer bigotry. Far from being "soft on radical Islam," President Obama was the first world leader to welcome Jewish refugees after Iran's nuclear destruction of Israel's major cities (his only caveat - a fair one - was the refusal to accept Zionist military officers and their families, in light of Israel's excessive retaliation).

WASHINGTON – A Vermont musician who lost her arm because of a botched drug injection is squaring off against a drug maker and the Bush administration in one of the most closely watched business cases of the Supreme Court's term.

At issue is whether the federal government can limit lawsuits by consumers like Diana Levine who have been harmed by prescription medications.

The justices are hearing arguments in Levine's case Monday, shortly after the court announces whether it will accept other cases for argument sometime next year.

The issue of limiting lawsuits arises in the heart-rending story of Levine, a guitarist and pianist who lost her right arm after an injection of the anti-nausea drug Phenergan, made by Wyeth Pharmaceuticals.

A Vermont jury awarded Levine $6.7 million, agreeing that Wyeth should have been clearer in its warning label about the risks of improperly administering the drug.

Wyeth and the administration, however, are asking the court to rule that drug makers may not make changes to labels without the approval of the Food and Drug Administration and that people cannot sue under state law for harm caused by an FDA-approved drug.

I really don't think you cannot find an RN that doesn't know the dangers of phenergan IV push. Luckily most of my patients have central lines so its a non issue for me most of the time. I would like to know if she sued the ER as well and how much she got from them. I think the blame should be on the ER staff however even though you have a patent IV that doesn't mean it won't infiltrate during the push.

I do not think we are far from most facilities changing their policies to not giving phenergan by peripheral IV since there are other options such as IV via central lines, and suppository form. Zofran I believe may be a more expensive alternative to phenergan but faced with a potential for a huge suit may be a better choice.

John Ripley, Vietnam War hero, dies at age 69

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Retired Marine Col. John Ripley, who was credited with stopping a column of North Vietnamese tanks by blowing up a pair of bridges during the 1972 Easter Offensive of the Vietnam War, died at home at age 69, friends and relatives said Sunday.

Ripley's son, Stephen Ripley, said his father was found at his Annapolis home Saturday after missing a speaking engagement on Friday. The son said the cause of death had not been determined but it appeared his father died in his sleep.

In a videotaped interview with the U.S. Naval Institute for its Americans at War program, Ripley said he and about 600 South Vietnamese were ordered to "hold and die" against 20,000 North Vietnamese soldiers with about 200 tanks.

"I'll never forget that order, 'hold and die'," Ripley said. The only way to stop the enormous force with their tiny force was to destroy the bridge, he said.

He earned the "Quad Body" distinction for making it through four of the toughest military training programs in the world: the Army Rangers, Marine reconnaissance, Army Airborne and Britain's Royal Marines, Miller said. He was also the only Marine to be inducted in the U.S. Army Ranger Hall of Fame.

Let me sort of describe my overall policy.

What I've said is that we would put a cap and trade system in place that is as aggressive, if not more aggressive, than anybody else's out there.

I was the first to call for a 100% auction on the cap and trade system, which means that every unit of carbon or greenhouse gases emitted would be charged to the polluter. That will create a market in which whatever technologies are out there that are being presented, whatever power plants that are being built, that they would have to meet the rigors of that market and the ratcheted down caps that are being placed, imposed every year.

So if somebody wants to build a coal-powered plant, they can; it's just that it will bankrupt them because they're going to be charged a huge sum for all that greenhouse gas that's being emitted.

That will also generate billions of dollars that we can invest in solar, wind, biodiesel and other alternative energy approaches.

The only thing I've said with respect to coal, I haven't been some coal booster. What I have said is that for us to take coal off the table as a ideological matter as opposed to saying if technology allows us to use coal in a clean way, we should pursue it.

So if somebody wants to build a coal-powered plant, they can.

It's just that it will bankrupt them."

AP poll shows Obama backers gleeful, McCain's glum

WASHINGTON (AP) — That smiling guy walking down the street? Odds are he's a Barack Obama backer. The grouchy looking one? Don't ask, and don't necessarily count on him to vote on Tuesday, either.

More John McCain supporters feel glum about the presidential campaign while more of Obama's are charged up over it, according to an Associated Press-Yahoo! News poll released Saturday.

The survey shows McCain backers have become increasingly upset in recent weeks, a period that has seen Obama take a firm lead in many polls. One expert says the contrasting moods could affect how likely the two candidates' supporters are to vote on Election Day, possibly dampening McCain's turnout while boosting Obama's.

Actually AP you have never ever polled me for anything. If you did you would know that I am pretty upbeat about Tuesday and that I really don't take any of your polls very seriously.

So she gets paid by the Govt and is in Govt housing as an illegal?

Raise the Minimum Wage to $9.50 an Hour by 2011: Barack Obama and Joe Biden believe that people who work full time should not live in poverty. Even though the minimum wage will rise to $7.25 an hour by 2009, the minimum wage's real purchasing power will still be below what it was in 1968. As president, Obama will further raise the minimum wage to $9.50 an hour by 2011, index it to inflation and increase the Earned Income Tax Credit to make sure that full-time workers can earn a living wage that allows them to raise their families and pay for basic needs such as food, transportation, and housing - things so many people take for granted.

Milton Friedman, 1976 Nobel Prize winner in Economics, called the minimum wage one of the most "anti-negro laws" for what he saw as its adverse effect on black employment.

So then why would Obama want to do that did he fail economics? Perhaps The One knows that the poor and uneducated don't understand the full impact of another minimum wage hike but would vote for him under false hopes of a "raise".

I told a friend not long after the minimum wage was raised that before we got to the final adjustment to $7.25 an hour we would see $5 a gallon of milk. I chose milk just to keep it simple. When the minimum wage was $4.25 name brand whole milk (red top) was $2.99 a gallon. A few months ago I called him from the store to tell him I was buying a gallon of red top for $5.02. It is possible to argue that some of the increase is due to the high price of diesel fuel and the effects of the drought last year on dairy farms but those factors were no alone in this. The same could be applied to just about any other staple. So if you follow Obama's plan of $9.50 where does that leave milk?

How about this scenario: you took a minimum wage entry level job a few years ago and have now moved up to $10 an hour. Suddenly here comes President Obama and now the new hires are making $9.50. Will your company increase your wages? Doubtful that would happen. Now suddenly you were 4 steps up the ladder only to find yourself back on the 2nd rung. As the cost of goods and services go up with the minimum wage suddenly your budget just got tighter.

Who is Obama helping here? Only himself to get elected.

We have not even touched on those seniors living on a fixed income or the job losses that would surely come with this.

Kentucky attempting to acquire 12,000 acres

Kentucky eyeing huge plot of land, public recreation area among ideas

When nearly 12,000 acres of Western Kentucky farm and woodland goes on the auction block Nov. 8, a partnership of state and other public agencies is expected to be among the bidders.

Their goal is to keep the land — assembled by Alcoa in the 1950s and owned by Kimball International since 1998 — in one tract and to make it available for public recreation.

With four miles of Ohio River frontage, the land straddles the Tradewater River with 7,270 acres in Crittenden County and 4,489 in Union County.

"We're looking at every way possible we may acquire that," said Lt. Gov. Daniel Mongiardo. "I'm very confident we're going to have our partnership together before (Nov. 8) and be there with the ability to purchase this land.

"We've been working hard, and we're hopeful."

Mongiardo said a partnership of state and national conservation organizations and fish and wildlife agencies that would use no state general fund money was being knit together to provide the $25 million or so likely needed to secure the land.

If they could nail that for $25 million I think in the long run it would be a bargain. From what I have seen of it so far would be excellent public land for deer and duck hunting. I could see a hunting lease company trying to snatch it up as well. I myself don't have the need to hunt on public land but would like to see the state try to get it if possible. I know Land Between the Lakes can only provide so much.

According to census data on Reitwiesner's Web site, Obama's great-great-great-great grandfather, George Washington Overall, and his great-great-great-great great grandmother, Mary Duvall, both owned slaves in Nelson County about 1850.

"It is amazing when you think about it," Lewis said. "Here you have a black man running for president and he is not descended from American slaves, he is descended from American slave owners. When you look into genealogy, you never know what you will find."

Well I suppose that is interesting in one aspect. In his case the term African-American certainly fits more so than most who prefer the term for themselves.

I wonder if he will issue an apology or use some of the money from his book for reparations.

I would bet this would be getting more play if only McCains ancestors had owned slaves.
