Drug agents crack down on prostitution via Craigslist

OCALA - The ads on Craigslist.org feature alluring headlines like “Hot Hot Hot,” “You can have me all to yourself” and “Full Body Massage.”

Some of the ads, authorities say, are solicitations for legitimate area businesses offering dancing or massage therapy.

Others are not-so-subtle offers of prostitution

Marion County investigators on Friday announced that they arrested seven women who were offering sex for sale on Craigslist, joining an increasing number of police departments nationwide who are cracking down on prostitution on the popular Web site.

Capt. Lee Sullivan, head of the Marion County Multi-Agency Drug Enforcement Team, which conducted the sting, said officials launched the operation because they’d been receiving frequent complaints from citizens.

One of the complaints was from a woman who was angry because her husband, following a tryst with a prostitute advertising on Craigslist, brought home a sexually transmitted disease.

Why is the drug squad wasting time on this? Putting women out of work in a recession what are they thinking? They should be out earning revenue for the city by writing speeding tickets.

But Nitschke's actions have revived concerns that healthy elderly and vulnerable people will end up killing themselves in the belief that they have become a burden to their families.

Thanks to suburban sprawl and a growth in numbers of both people and animals, a rash of coyote encounters has alarmed residents.

Wildlife officials are working to educate the public: Coyotes have always been here, they've adapted to urban landscapes and they prefer to avoid humans.

"Ninety-five percent of this problem is a human problem, and we really need to focus on that 95 percent to solve it," said Nicole Rosmarino, wildlife program director of the environmental group WildEarth Guardians.

Well Nicole the problem is they are getting used to humans and are obviously not frightened anymore. Luckily coyote hunting is fun and is open year round.

Because I keep getting asked...... A few reasons why I consider myself a Republican: I believe in less taxes and less government spending

I'm not a libertarian because I believe in some government taxes and some government spending.

Government can be a force for good, so long as its well managed.

I believe in STRONG fiscal and national security or as I like to call it, good government done right

Even if I don't agree with every issue of the party, its the party I agree most with. And I believe with the right leader can flourish again

And that ladies and gentleman are just a few reasons why I consider myself a Republican!

But like I said, the label that best defines me (even though I hate labels) is a Progressive Republican, like a lot of you out there :-)

This party needs to get back to its roots and stop making social issues a focal point of the platform. As it says in The Declaration of

Independence "all men are created equal" and that means, everyone in this country is equal. Not "separate but equal", thats where I differ..

I think Meghan mistakes Libertarians for Anarchists. She sounds like a Libertarian Republican to me. But she is right about many things.

The Republican party is dieing. Dieing because they are loosing the younger vote and will continue unless they change course soon. Luckily for them younger voters are more pragmatic than their elders and are not as devoted to party. Both parties are failing us and we know it. The GOP social agenda is alienating the younger voters. Many of those in the GOP think they lost the last election because McCain was not "conservative" enough. They think if they trot out a hard right candidate in 2012 the base will show up to vote. This isn't rocket science the base always shows up to vote. Maybe after a humiliating defeat in 2012 the GOP will realize their mistake or maybe not.

GOP predicts doomsday if Obama budget passed

Congressional Republicans on Sunday predicted a doomsday scenario of crushing debt and eventual federal bankruptcy if President Barack Obama's massive spending blueprint wins passage.

But a White House adviser dismissed the negative assessments, saying she is "incredibly confident" that the president's policies will "do the job" for the economy.

In a TV interview, Obama himself laughed when discussing the dire state of parts of the economy — and ascribed his laughter to "gallows humor."

White House Council of Economic Advisers chairwoman Christina Romer insisted that the nation's flailing economy will be rebounding by 2010.

Regardless doomsday is still 01/01/2011. Why do you ask? Its the day the very first Baby Boomer turns 65 and can apply for full Social Security and Medicare. If we don't go bankrupt in 2010 it is still speeding down the track like a runaway train. Congress has chosen to ignore and will act surprised when their ponzi scheme goes bust.

Feinstein seeks block solar power from desert land

California's Mojave Desert may seem ideally suited for solar energy production, but concern over what several proposed projects might do to the aesthetics of the region and its tortoise population is setting up a potential clash between conservationists and companies seeking to develop renewable energy.

Nineteen companies have submitted applications to build solar or wind facilities on a parcel of 500,000 desert acres, but Sen. Dianne Feinstein said Friday such development would violate the spirit of what conservationists had intended when they donated much of the land to the public.

Feinstein said Friday she intends to push legislation that would turn the land into a national monument, which would allow for existing uses to continue while preventing future development.

An AP article entitled "$1 trillion deficits seen for next 10 years" explains that:

* "Congressional Budget Office figures predict Obama's budget will produce $9.3 trillion worth of red ink over 2010-2019. That's $2.3 trillion worse than the White House predicted in its budget." Since economic forecasts have not worsened in the few weeks since the Adminstration made its proposal public, it means that they underestimated the debt they're piling on future generations by a full 30% with no excuse to be made about changing forecasts.

* "Worst of all, CBO says the deficit under Obama's policies would never go below 4 percent of the size of the economy, figures that economists agree are unsustainable. By the end of the decade, the deficit would exceed 5 percent of gross domestic product, a dangerously high level."

Nobody who has been paying attention is surprised by this news. But now that it's come from the CBO instead of from evil supporters of liberty and free markets, maybe the public and -- dare I say it -- Democratic legislators will start pushing back against the destruction of our nation's economy.

More babies were born in the United States in 2007 than any year in the nation's history, topping the peak during the baby boom 50 years earlier, federal researchers reported Wednesday.

There is both good and bad news from the more than 4.3 million births:

_The U.S. population is more than replacing itself, a healthy trend.

_However, the teen birth rate was up for the second year in a row.

The birth rate rose slightly for women of all ages, and births to unwed mothers reached an all-time high of about 40 percent, continuing a trend begun years ago. More than three-quarters of these women were 20 or older.

The Obama administration says the Fourth Amendment prohibition against unreasonable searches and seizures does not apply to cell-site information mobile phone carriers retain on their customers.

The position is being staked out in a little-noticed surveillance case pending before the 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Philadelphia. The case has wide-ranging implications for Americans, as most citizens have or will carry a mobile phone in their lifespan.

At issue is whether the government can require federal judges to order mobile phone companies to release historical cell-tower information of a phone number without probable cause — the standard required for a search warrant. While judges have varied on the issue, the resulting evidence can be used in a criminal prosecution.

I'm sure the left will be outraged.

Fossil sea monster's bite makes T-Rex look feeble

A giant fossil sea monster found in the Arctic and known as "Predator X" had a bite that would make T-Rex look feeble, scientists said on Monday.

The 50 ft (15 meter) long Jurassic era marine reptile had a crushing 33,000 lbs (15 metric tons) per square inch bite force, the Natural History Museum of Oslo University said of the new find on the Norwegian Arctic archipelago of Svalbard.

"With a skull that's more than 10 feet long you'd expect the bite to be powerful but this is off the scale," said Joern Hurum, an associate professor of vertebrate paleontology at the museum who led the international excavation in 2008.

Group wants fewer turtles harvested in Kentucky, other states

The Arizona-based Center for Biological Diversity, joined by Kentucky Heartwood and two dozen other groups, has asked eight southern and midwestern states to end "unsustainable commercial harvests."

At least one commercial trapper works on Reelfoot Lake in Western Kentucky. There's also a trapper who specializes in removing turtles from stock farms in that part of the state.

Turtles can live for 100 years, but reproduce slowly. Removing just a few adults from a pond or stream can impact the turtle population for decades, the center said.

Green heads breed like cockroaches in my lake maybe the folks in Arizona should mind their own business.

Now this hits the news: Louisiana jury finds woman guilty of killing 3-month old by putting him in clothes dryer

A Louisiana woman has been found guilty of killing her baby by putting him into a clothes dryer and turning the machine on.

A jury convicted Lakeisha Adams of second-degree murder Saturday for the death of her 3-month-old son, Jailand in December 2005. The local coroner's office said the child suffered blunt force trauma to his head as well as second and third degree burns on half of his body. The mother, who also had a 1-year-old child, was 18 at the time.

Police in the town of Bogalusa said Adams admitted putting the infant in the dryer and turning it on, but did not explain why.

Her lawyer asked jurors to find her not guilty or not guilty by reason of insanity. Adams is expected to be sentenced later this month

Hope they find a "special" cellmate for her.

From Wired: Dangerous Japanese 'Detergent Suicide' Technique Creeps Into U.S.

A suicide technique that mixes household chemicals to produce a deadly hydrogen sulfide gas became a grisly fad in Japan last year. Now it's slowly seeping into the United States over the internet, according to emergency workers, who are alarmed at the potential for innocent causalities.

At least 500 Japanese men, women and children took their lives in the first half of 2008 by following instructions posted on Japanese websites, which describe how to mix bath sulfur with toilet bowl cleaner to create a poisonous gas. One site includes an application to calculate the correct portions of each ingredient based on room volume, along with a PDF download of a ready-made warning sign to alert neighbors and emergency workers to the deadly hazard.

The first sign that the technique was migrating to the United States came in August, when a 23-year-old California man was found dead in his car behind a Pasadena shopping center. The VW Beetle's doors were locked, the windows rolled up and a warning sign had been posted in one of the windows. Police and firefighters evacuated the shopping crew before a hazmat crew in chemical suits extracted the body and began cleaning up the grisly scene.

Then in December, emergency workers responding to a call at Lake Allatoona in Bartow County, Georgia, found a similar scene. Inside the car — along with the body — were two buckets containing a yellow substance. A note on the window said "Caution" and identified the chemical compound by name.

Nobody connected the cases until last month, when a Texas surgeon realized that a new and dangerous suicide method was making the rounds. Dr. Paul Pepe, chief of emergency medicine at UT Southwestern Medical Center, warned emergency workers that they could become innocent casualties of the technique if they're not careful. Other experts agree.

That is just crazy but if they were really sane would they be trying to kill themselves?

The pledge drive was announced with a video called “Ready for the Fight.” Plouffe e-mailed supporters over the weekend with a challenge labeled “The next few weeks”: “In the next few weeks we'll be asking you to do some of the same things we asked of you during the campaign—talking directly to people in your communities about the President's ideas for long-term prosperity.”

This is not an easy message war for Democrats. Obama's budget calls for the largest deficit in U.S. history and a doubling of the national debt to $23 trillion in 2019. That is a big, juicy target for the GOP, which plans to hit this theme relentlessly all spring.

Saw Meghan's Twitter posts last night but wasn't sure what it was about til today. Meghan is raising some valid points about the GOP and they better be paying attention or face another blood bath. Generation X and Y do not seem as partisan and simple minded as the Boomers before us. We are pragmatic and want problems solved no matter who does it. Those in office now are an epic failure and should be recycled at the earliest opportunity.

Some believe that critical thinking was once cultivated in schooling. But it is fair to ask if it has ever really been fostered in a meaningful way in mainstream schooling (and the standardized testing movement is only making it worse). Teachers, like students, live in a nonintellectual culture, one that, for the most part, neither values fair-minded critical thinking nor encourages it.

If we want to effectively deal with the tremendous problems we now face, we must begin teaching students to discipline their own thinking. Teachers must move beyond rote and merely active engagement, and work toward transforming how students reason through complex issues, to look beyond easy answers.

As part of their reaccreditations, the University of Louisville and Eastern Kentucky University are both making concerted efforts to bring critical thinking across the curriculum.

Mention of 2 Kentucky Universities there but I wonder if that is not a little late in the game to try to teach critical thinking. First semester nursing school can certainly make short work of those that cannot critically think. I remember a lecture and lab on critical thinking skills and voicing my opinion that critical thinking could not be taught to that group. They either could do it or not. It probably could be taught but not in a day certainly and would be much easier if grade school taught the skills. Schools are not interested in students thinking just memorizing and obeying. Schools are run by politicians not teachers and politicians certainly do not want the public growing up to think it would endanger their reelections.

MARYVILLE, Ill. – A hospital spokeswoman in a community in Illinois says one person has arrived dead from a church where a shooting reportedly occurred.

Natalie Head of Anderson Hospital in Maryville says two other people transferred from First Maryville Baptist Church were wounded in the suburb of St. Louis, Mo.

Illinois State Police Lt. Scott Compton confirms that there was a shooting in a Maryville church. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch and KDSK-TV Channel 5 of St. Louis say the shooting occurred at the First Baptist Church in Maryville.

The Post-Dispatch also says the suspected attacker is in custody.

Maryville is about 20 miles northeast of St. Louis.

I guess if you want to go on a rampage its a pretty safe place to be the only one armed.

While looking for something else I ran across a book I first read around the time I was forming my own political identity Revolution X: A Survival Guide for Our Generation by Jon Cowan and Rob Nelson. While it is now very much out of date I think the sentiment behind their organization Lead or Leave is still timely as the national debt is staggering.
