New school honors Master Sgt. Gary Gordon

Gordon Elementary School opens in Harnett

The school is named in honor of the late Master Sgt. Gary I. Gordon, one of two Fort Bragg soldiers who received the Medal of Honor for actions in Somalia in 1993.

“We are officially the Gordon Patriots, in honor of Gary Gordon,” Young said. “We felt like to be the Patriots was the best way to honor him since to give your life for your country is the most patriotic thing you can do.”

Gordon received the nation’s highest military award posthumously for actions in the battle of Mogadishu, featured in the book and movie “Black Hawk Down.” A dedication ceremony will be held at 9:30 a.m. Feb. 27.

The Gordon Patriots that is outstanding!
